Term 1

Welcome to our Oak Class page. We have a very busy term ahead with wonderful opportunities to learn a range of skills.

Firstly, in maths we are studying place values up to 7 digits and understanding how these can be partitioned. We are then moving on to all four operations, once place value knowledge is secure. In English, we are looking at setting descriptions both in poetry and story genre. This will be helped with texts such as Peace on Earth, The Highwayman and The Promise. We are looking at a range of grammar techniques and spellings using the ULS ransom scheme. This breaks down the understanding and revisiting of Y4/5 common spellings together with words that have prefixes and suffixes. Handwriting is also a main focus, using cursive formation and general neat presentation. In Science, we are studying Charles Darwin and his work on Evolution. How animals have adapted over time, to survive their habitats. We are then moving on to studying the importance of fossils.

In History, we are researching Trade in Bristol and how it has had a huge impact around the world. This is a fascinating subject that touches on slavery in the 17th century.

PE this term is every Monday, and we are studying hockey. Children will be learning to pass, dribble and play in teams. It's so much fun.

We are doing a reading challenge in Oak class and children are encouraged to read every night and complete a reading record. House Points are awarded each week, for the reading they have completed at home.

On the 3rd October, Oak class will be 'Learning with the Lords' online. This is a unique opportunity for our children to interview a 'Lord' and ask interesting questions. On the 8th October, Year 6 are venturing to Bristol for a 'Life Skills' workshop, which is also exciting.

All in all we are very busy learning and having fun at the same time.
