Science

Picture a school that ignites pupil’s curiosity and encourages them to explore and question the world around them through a stimulating science curriculum. Picture a school that adopts an inquiry based approach to inspire and excite pupils whilst ensuring progression of scientific understanding, knowledge and skills.
 

This intent is implemented by encouraging all pupils to ask questions, take risks, make predictions, experiment, analyse causes and make and learn from mistakes in a safe environment with appropriate challenge.  

The children are taught technical terminology, and supported to use it accurately and precisely within their science topic. These topics are from the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. When suitable, learning is linked to the class topic.

Pupil’s self-discovery of concepts, exploring misconceptions and revising key learning points throughout the academic year, help to ensure secure understanding of each key block.

Working together on new investigations supports the children’s development of transferable skills such as critical thinking, speaking and listening, teamwork and mathematical skills.  

Our school recognises that science is an important aspect of everyday life, and that applying it to the outside world is fundamental. Members of the community are therefore encouraged to share their experience and expertise. Taking part in the annual South West Science Challenge allows pupils to work together to solve a problem which is related to a real life issue. The whole school teaches awareness of the Global Goals. We have an ethos of caring for the world around us in the immediate and wider environment and community.

When teaching, we recognise that the school grounds and local area can offer rich resources which we can utilise to effectively meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum programmes of study.

In an increasingly scientific and technological age, we hope the impact of this will be the creation of lifelong learners who think, plan and act scientifically, who are scientifically literate and who wish to take an active role in this field.
